The Japanese language is considered to be the most difficult language to learn in many western countries. Is the Japanese language really hard to learn for westerners?
The answer is YES if you want to learn academic Japanese. It is very hard to learn the three writing systems: Kanji (漢字), Hiragana (平仮名 ひらがな)and Katakana (片仮名 カタカナ). It is even harder to master Keigo (敬語) – the polite way of speaking Japanese. You need to spend a long time studying to read and write Japanese.
The answer is NO if you only want to learn some basic Japanese conversation to travel to Japan or make Japanese friends. This is because the Japanese language does not have a difficult tone change as in the Chinese language. It is flat and easy to speak.
The best way to learn is to study speaking first. If you can speak Japanese and like the language, it gives you the motivation to spend more time studying reading and writing.
